Creating beautiful books is at the heart of what we do. For over 15 years we have established a reputation for titles that bring the best of contemporary book design to diverse subjects that involve Russia or that come to Russia as exhibitions. We work only with the most experienced translators and editors to ensure that the text is true to the original and properly edited, whether in English or Russian. If we are producing a book in both languages, which is often the case, Fontanka is responsible for all stages of both editions – translating, editing, proofreading, setting, and so on. For the Russian editions we have a dedicated editor in St Petersburg.
We are also, perhaps unusually in illustrated publishing, able to react very quickly to ideas and commissions. In 2015, for example, we were asked to produce a book for an exhibition of the work of the architect Zaha Hadid at the Hermitage. The schedule seemed impossible – a matter of weeks – but by clearing our desks it was achieved.
